Teach Us to Rest – Janet Eriksson

Lord Jesus, You have taught us that we can come to You when we are weary, and You will give us rest.

What a wonderful invitation. It sounds so delightful. All we have to do is say, “Jesus, I’m tired. I want to rest.” And You are right there to help us rest.

But Lord, too often we keep going, even when we know we should stop and call out to You.

The world has taught us to be “on” all the time and not to rest. We get stressed, sick, burned out, miserable. Our body, soul, and spirit are constantly looking for refreshment, and we find it in quick fixes that don’t truly satisfy. We need You, Jesus.

Help us learn to rest. Teach us what the world does not. That rest is a good and vital part of life. And that true rest comes only from You.

Teach us how to be at rest even as we work. Help us learn to live from a place of rest, so everything we do carries Your peace and changes the atmosphere around us.

We can’t learn this by ourselves, Lord, without Your help. So please teach us to rest. And when we forget to rest, remind us. Help us daily to stay focused on You and the beautiful peace You bring.

Thank You, God, for the gift of rest.

We pray all this in Your name, Jesus. Amen

Jesus said, “’Are you weary, carrying a heavy burden? Then come to me. I will refresh your life, for I am your oasis. Simply join your life with mine. Learn my ways and you’ll discover that I’m gentle, humble, easy to please. You will find refreshment and rest in me. For all that I require of you will be pleasant and easy to bear.’” — Matthew 11:28-30 (TPT)
